Creating a device?

First off I wish to thank the fine people here whos talent has brought about this whole experience and especially to Tommy Tyler for his excellent Simple JP1 rev5 article that made this possible for me. His level of detail in the pictures alone made making my first cable a no brainer.

I recently added a Durabrand 5.1 amp to my setup and its dinky remote, added to the remotes for the replayTV, TV, DVD, cable and VCR prompted me to seek a new remote and JP1 methods to reduce my cunfusion and clutter. Thankfully, JP1 and the Robman came to my attention in the Replay forums at AVS.

The Durabrand HT-395 sorround amp seems to be too new and I cannot find any codes for it. ( for those of you wondering, the amp is OK for the price - $60 on sale at Walmart - but only 100 watt total and not really loud enough for most people especially in Prologic mode.) It also has some other irritating quirks I can mention if someone wants a review on it.

Fortunately for me, my JP1 remote (RS 15-2116) is a learning remote and I was able to use the amp with it. Since I am not able to find any remote info here or abroad for this amp I want to make something to share with others. Do I need to make a new device or an upgrade? How do I use my learning remote and IR.exe to make a file that can be posted for others?

I have read many posts and docs for various programs but much of that assumes a familiarity and knowledge I don't have. I just can't seem to pull it all together or I am not grasping the underlying logic to accomplish this task. My immediate goals are:

Create a device? file for this amp and get some learning memory back in my remote.

Add an INPUT key to my 2116 remote for my ReplayTV 5040 that doesnt have an Input key that I can "learn" (but the funtion is still there from earlier models)

Could someone do a bit of hand holding or point me to some explicit articles geared towards the Noob?

You can also download the eeprom image containing those learned signals into IR.EXE and save it to a .txt file and post it in the diagnosis folder and post the URL of that file back here. If there is anything unusual about the learned signals or if you're just confused by the process of converting information from learned signals into an upgrade, having a copy of that eeprom image will let us give more specific answers to any questions you have.

Have you seen this?

It gives a good overview of creating a device upgrade. The fundamental question is when you learn a command and then download the file from from the remote in IR, do the commands decode to a Protocol/Device/sub-device/OBC/EFC?

If it does, then follow the instructions about creating a device upgrade using learned commands.

If not, learn as many commands as you can (probably around 25) and save that file and upload it to the diagnosis area in the JP1 Yahoo group, read the sticky post about posting links to Yahoo files, and post a link in your reply so one of us can take a look at the learned signals.

Please note that I am using Remote Master 0.98 and IR 5.01 as I do not have a complete Excel with Analysis toolkit as my Excel was preloaded on old laptop.

Those all use NEC1 device 128. Open RM select your remote (2116) and select the kind of device type you want; lets say AMP, pick a setup code, say 2004. In protocol select NEC1 from the pull down menu. Put 128 in device number. Put a description at the very top "Durabrand HT-395" or anything else you choose.

In the functions tab you can use the pre-printed description in the left column if it works or write over it with your command description. Put the OBC's for the relevant function in the OBC column. Once all commands are entered go to the buttons tab and assign those functions to buttons. You drag and drop the buttons from the box on the right. At that point it's probably a good idea to save the file.

Open IR, and select download from remote. That gets your remote image into IR. Then copy the device upgrade from the Output tab in IR everything including from "Upgrade to End", open the devices tab in IR add and paste in the upgrade hit OK. Go to the General tab and assign 2004 to the audio device key and upload to remote.

Then test.

You did a good job of gathering the information. IIUC, you haven't yet created the upgrade with RM. But that should be very easy.

All your signals are NEC1 protocol, device 128, no subdevice. That information goes in the obvious place on RM's Setup tab.

While I was starting to type the above, Jon covered all that.

Jon mentioned the choice of using the prepopulated function names on RM's functions tab. DON'T.

In your "remote keys" file, I see that the true names of the functions do not resemble the common names prepopulated in RM. It is much better to type over the prepopulated names with correct names.

When you're ready to install the device upgrade into your eeprom image in IR.EXE remember to delete the learned signals from that copy of the file. Otherwise, when you upload to the remote to test, you would just be testing the learned signals. Keep the version with learned signals in a seperate file on your PC in case you need it later.

Woohoo! I think I got it!

I didn't realize that the function entries in RM were just convenience entries and not tied to the remotes' innards (I freaked when I couldn't locate the INFO function)

I have created and uploaded an unassigned code file to the RM upgrade directory and loaded the same fie into my remote. I also managed to import Robmans' Hacked Replay codes onto RM then into IR which was then fed to my remote.

This is so cool

I bought this remote just to experiment with then maybe return to RS if it was going to be a hassle... now you'd better pack a lunch to get me to give it up!

I originally went to get an RS touchscreen remote thinking it was an Star Trek LCARS type thingy (wishfull thinking I know) but it turned out to be flat static LCD controls with back lighting. Nice wow factor but no tactile feel to zero in on controls in the dark while half asleep

Anyway, thanks again for the help and the kick in the pants.

When I try to load the DM version of that file I get prompted telling my I need KM ver 8.28

On the yahoo groups the latest version I see is 8.27

Can someone help me

V8.28 hasn't been released yet. You can still open that file in earlier version; just ignore the message. When you resave it, it will change the saved version ID to whatever you're using.
