Getting Non-JP1 Ready Remote to Understand

Post by ti83programmer »

I have a Magnavox WebTV wireless keyboard and remote (don't worry, I'm only interested in the remote), and a quick lookup on the internet and in Devices4.xls shows that device 0818 will work perfectly. I learned some signals with my 8811 and built my own device upgrade, which, coincidentally, contained the exact same protocol info. Yet, when I try to enter 0818 on the remote, it doesn't recognize it. I figure it must be for other remotes. Anyway, the problem is that my 6012 doesn't have any pins soldered in (and I don't plan to put them in), and I'd like to use it as the new WebTV remote (with extra stuff, like switching between TV inputs, etc., all easily done with 994). Anyway, back to the point, the device upgrade I made for my 8811 didn't need a protocol upgrade, so that means both my 8811 and 6012 understand that protocol natively. So what I'm getting at is, can I somehow trick the 6012 into sending out the right signal (like maybe another device code I'm unaware of that uses the same protocol and device info). It's a longshot, and possibly a stupid question, but hey, it can't hurt to ask.

VIDACC/0818 uses the RC-6 protocol ($0058) with a device code of 36 ($80 $24). There is no other setup code in the URC-8811 family of remotes that uses the same device code.

Now, I'm curious as to why you are dedicated to keeping the URC-6012 non-JP1? If you were willing to have it be a JP1 remote, you could easily send it into OFA and ask them to load the VIDACC/0818 code for you, but this would mean that they will return you a JP1-ready remote.

I just didn't want to put a lot of effort into it, I was just curious. I can send my 6012 to OFA for (relatively) little money and they return me a JP1-ready remote?

I don't know the exact details. I assume you pay postage to them. I'm pretty sure they don't charge anything for the actual upgrade.

There is an 800 number in the documentation you can call for details.

They use 1K eeproms, which gives you JP1 capability for everything except the "extender".

Eep, 1K EEPROM. So this means I can still use all the special protocols and everything (except the extender), as long as memory permits? Awesome.

I don't think IR.EXE (via RDF files) knows how to use the second half of the 2k eeprom for anything other than learned signals or the extender.

In theory you could import learned signals from another remote into a 6012, but it's tricky and relatively pointless and no one does it.

So if you aren't using the extender, the 1K eeprom isn't even any limit on memory capacity vs. the 2K.

BTW, don't ask UEI (via 800 number) to make your remote JP1 ready. They don't offer that service. Ask them to add a specific device upgrade. They do offer that service and can't do that without also making it JP1 ready.
