Basic question: how to install extender for 2117?

Post by kcepull »

I'm trying (for the first time) to install the 2116ex2 extender. The instructions say to save your configuration from IR as a .txt file, but IR will only save to an .IR file. ExtInstall complains that it doesn't like the .IR file. I'm sure I'm missing something obvious, but need a little guidance.

TIA,
Karl

Paul was supposed to add this note to the readme, but guess he hasn't done so yet. The workaround is explained here.

IR 5 save both formats. Sort the folder by name and the .ir and .txt will be one after the other.

Uh...I did...see below

IR Release 5.00 Notes

This new version of IR has significant enhancements in the area Special Protocols, notes for Macros, KeyMoves, Devices, Protcols and a Global note on the general panel. It is also different than the prior IR in that it creates the notes and traditional IR upgrade information in one file, named exactly the same way the previous version names the file but uses an .IR extension instead. Once you have saved the file as an .IR you can open and use it in IR5.00 in a normal way. IR 5.00 also saves the buffer info in the traditional TXT file in case you need it to use with other apps that do no support the new file format at this time. However, remember that if you open the .TXT file and select an explicit save any notes or other changes in the .IR file will be overwritten. Therefore, think carefully before answering YES.

WARNING: The .IR format has the following limitations

1) This .IR version of the file has a significantly different format to incorporate the notes.

2) It is not compatible with the previous versions of IR.

3) It is not compatible with the current version of ExtInstall for extender installation

4) It is not compatible with the current version of IRtoWav.

So do I need to use an old version of IR?

Post by kcepull »

Since IR5 isn't compatible with ExtInstall, and I don't see a version of ExtInstall that is compatible with IR5, does that mean I need to use an older version of IR? Or, is there another way?

[I tried following the instructions in the readme.txt for IR5 that talk about editing the .IR file to remove lines, then running it through ExtInstall. That worked, but when I try to open the 'new.ir' file produced by ExtInstall, IR can't seem to understand it. I get errors in IR about 'static' data overwriting other data, etc. And, none of my macros, or keymoves are there, nor are the new devices that the extender is supposed to have.]

I've seen a few people say that IR5 write out both .IR and .TXT files when you save. I only have .IR files in my directory. Where are the .TXT files saved?

You may not be on the latest version of 5.0 since the double save was added after the first release of 5.0. Download it again and open and save the upgrade. You should then see both in the same folder.
