If you need a cable for an old EEPROM based JP1 remote, like the 15-1994, URC-9910, etc here's your best option.

1. Buy an FTDI cable from Chip Partner on ebay for $9
http://www.ebay.com/itm/261101529602

2. Buy an EEPROM adapter from DIY for $10
https://www.diygadget.com/jp1-1-1-1-2-1-3-cables/107-jp1-2-1-3-to-jp1-adapter.html

This thread will show you how to connect the two:
http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=16360

UPDATE: The DIYGadget EEPROM adapter linked above is no longer available. The best solutions as of 2021 are:

- Make an adapter using an Arduino:
http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=102890

- Buy a complete JP1 EEPROM USB interface from TxSat (Tommy Tyler design):
http://txsat.net/JP1_EEPROM.html

Neither of the above require an additional FTDI JP1.x cable.

You're better off getting the ebay cable in the first thread, it has been well proven to work reliably.

I have the DIYGadget FTDI cable right now as it has a FT231X whereas the Chip Partner ones have a FT232RQ

So far, I have had no issues using various JP1, JP1.3, and JP2 remotes with it.

I found this while doing doing some research on which chipset is better.

This might sound a strange question: I've just received the adaptor from diygadgets, and am waiting for the FTDI cable to arrive. The problem is that I can't see anything on the adaptor to tell me which way round it goes in. I could use trial and error, but will it damage the remote or the adaptor?

No damage, use trial and error, but by all means give some feedback to DIY (known as "prelude" here) telling him that he needs to mark pin1.

We have told him before...

The other thing confusing me is that the instructions on this site say to connect the RTS, TXD, RXD and GND wires, but the wires on offer in the item linked to in the top post here, show 5V instead of RTS.

Seller has the wrong picture now. The correct pinout is further down in the listing details.

In which case I've probably ordered the wrong lead. Oops.

Did you buy from this listing:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/261101529602

If so, you'll be getting the right cable. I bought another one recently myself and even though the picture now just shows 4 leads, further down in the listing he lists all 6:

1 - Black:GND
2 - Blue:CTS
3 - Red:5V
4 - Green:TXD
5 - White:RXD
6 - Yellow:RTS

If you bought something else, post a link to it and we'll try to see if it's still the right cable.

Davecs, that's not a good idea. Prolific ones (PLxxxx) don't work well with JP1 remotes or our software. You need to stick with an FTDI cable like in our links. If you do get yours working, it won't necessarily work with all JP1 remotes or have working drivers for newer OS's.

I was thinking that, but if you look at the recommended link at the top of the thread, it has a similar title.

When we first started buying from that seller years ago, the listing was correct. But now both the title and picture are wrong. It isn't a PL (Prolific) chip at all and is 6 conductor, not 4. There's no way you would have known that. We only know from direct experience.

In any case, I've notified the seller of the errors. Hopefully he will correct them.

OK not a problem. It was only £2 anyway. I'd rather not buy from a seller who doesn't seem to know what he's selling and may change it! There are a lot of boards for sale, with FT232RL chip, designed for Arduino, but I figure that I can get some Female/Female Dupont connector wires, would that do the trick? Thanks for your help!
