key moves question with 15-2116

Post by ngtw16a »

I have a question about the key move in IR.exe

using an 15-2116 remote
I'm in V8.04 and I mapped my cable box to CBL
and assigned my TV to DB14 = 0017

my goal was to map the power and vol+- from Db14 over to CBL
(as my dta box is always on).

BUT...when I get into the key move screen:

target device is CBL,
target key is Power
source device is db-14

but my choices are only EFC or hex...
I thought I saw in the docs...a 3rd choice called 'key' ???

map the 'power' button(key) from device db14 to device cbl ??

this way...I have to KNOW that the vol+ code for 0017 is XXX

Does this 'key' option only exist for 'updated devices??'

Remote Master has more options than IR. You should use that instead.

I don't think RMIR vs. IR.exe will make a difference in this case. When you do a key-style keymove on the remote itself, on a remote like the 15-2116, it will reach into the remote's ROM memory to find the EFC and copy it to the desired key. When you're doing a keymove in IR or RMIR, it doesn't have access to that ROM memory, so it doesn't know what the EFC code is, therefore you have to enter it yourself.

Given that you don't know the EFC, you should do the keymove on the remote itself, then download the memory again (using IR or RMIR) and it will tell you the EFCs.

Sorry, I was thinking of remotes where all the devices are in the RMIR file. On those, you can choose keymove functions by name.

No I think you were just thinking of a newer remote. Newer remotes can do keymoves by keycode, but as Rob said, older remotes reach into the remote and set up a keymove, by the EFC instead of using the keycode. This must be a vintage RS remote, that does not do keycode keymoves. So the user can set up the keymove manually on the remote, or he can look up the EFC's via the look up tool.
Remember to provide feedback to let us know how the problem was solved and share your upgrades.

Tip: When creating an upgrade, always include ALL functions from the oem remote, even if you never plan on assigning them to a button. Complete function lists makes an upgrade more helpful to others.
