Since the time that remotes using simpleset.com, and some Xsight/Nevo remotes, have been able to use JP1's RMIR program the difficulties and extra expense associated with the need for a special JP1 cable have been bypassed.

This is because those remotes are supplied with a suitable usb connection lead.

If an lcd screen is required the Xsight remotes and their Nevo equivalents might be more attractive, while they do not use simpleset.com

see the 'cable' column http://www.hifi-remote.com/wiki/index.php?title=RemoteChart

At least one new user found that it was easy to get started:-

The XSight remotes are still expensive, people will op for the Harmony remotes because they are more popular and ubiquitous.

I guess the only way is for hifi-remote to have their own online database that can be uploaded to a remote like the larger brands. The current method of trying to finding the right RMIR and then tweak it you the devices is just too technically difficult and challenging for most people.

I agree with the second paragraph completely. JP1 will always have limited appeal. But to those who invest the time and effort, they end up with a remote far more capable that Harmony at a small fraction of the price.

And remember, Logitech is a multi-million dollar corporation with a full-time staff of paid developers. JP1 is fully user supported. UEI has it's own device database, of course. But they've struggled to make their model as simple and popular as Logitech.

But Xsight remotes are extremely cheap compared to Harmony. The Xsight Color was $150 when it was introduced and is comparable to a Harmony One (~$250 these days), and far superior to a Harmony 700 (~$85). Now the Color is about $20, not expensive by any stretch of the imagination and one hell of a remote.
