Denon ADV-1000 HT/DVD Player Code

I'm new to the JP1 world. I built my cable a few months ago and have played a little with it, but not much. I have read the primers and have contacted OFA to get the "codes" they suggest for my device.

My remote is a URC-8800. It has learning to 6 specific buttons only, but IR.EXE does not recognize it as a "learning remote". I have a Pronto also, so learing to a .CCF and then converting it to something I can input into keymap-master is a possibility. I do have the original remote also.

So...OFAsupport sent me the following suggestion:

Audio Amp/Tuners ---- <TUN Group>: Denon HT/DVD
1104, 1142, 1311, 1360, 1434, 1660

Problem is my remote is so old that none of those codes are in its database. Does anyone have a remote with these codes that would be willing to provide them to me in a way such that I can import them as upgrades into IR.EXE?

I presume I could make my own upgrade via my Pronto and then creating an upgrade in keymap-master, but I'd like to avoid that if possible.

Usually hybrid devices use some commands from each device (receiver and DVD). Denon frequently uses more than one device code per device. Receivers generally use two: one for the amplifier functions and one for the tuner functions. IIRC, some Denon DVD's use up to three different device codes. Every different device code has 256 commands so that is looking at a lot of possibilities just to avoid learning ~30 keys.

If you learn all those commands in your Pronto it will eliminate much guesswork. We have a tool written by John Fine that can decode a Pronto ccf file, and it will tell you everything you need to know.

I looked at a variety of IR libraries including Denon's US and UK websites and didn't find anything for your model.

Did you check to see if there's already an upgrade for this device in either the DVD or HT Systems folders? If there isn't, then I would recommend that you learn all the buttons to your Pronto, create a CCF file and then, if you don't want to decode it yourself, post the file here and (maybe) someone will decode it for you.

You should also check the Pronto file section to see if there's already a CCF file for it.

I did look for an upgrade and there are none that work. I tried a DVD and an amplifier upgrade for Denon and neither seemed to work. I didn't find anything in the Pronto file section of remotecentral either.

I guess I'll learn the commands to my Pronto and then try to convert the CCF.

P.S. If I had a newer OFA remote that included the codes listed in my first post, is there a way to "extract" them in such a way as to be able to then import them as an upgrade into my current remote?

Yes, assuming it is an OFA learning remote, once you download the EEPROM into IR, it will decode those commands and give you Protocol, Device, sub-device, OBC, EFC and hex. However, the decoder is the same as that used by the software to decode a ccf file.

The net result is that you will get the same information either way. If you post the ccf file in the JP1 Yahoo Group files|diagnosis area , I'll be glad to decode it for you. Just respond back in this thread when you have posted it and tell me the name you gave it.

I think you're mis-reading his question (or I am). I read his question to mean, what if he had an OFA remote that had those codes pre-installed into the ROM, would he be able to get the necessary info using IR.exe, and the answer to that question is "no". The JP1 process just reads data from the EEPROM, not the ROM.

If you didn't have the original remote, I might go to effort of tracking down the data used by the codes you mentioned, but as you do have the original remote and you have a Pronto, it would be WAY easier for you to create a CCF file to get the codes, plus there would be no guess work.

Also, just FYI, there is a hardware mod available where you can modify your URC-8800 so you can see the learned signals using IR.exe I have done the mod myself and I would describe it as a "medium" level of difficulty. The mod itself is really very easy, but you will be dealing with very fine trace lines in a confined space, which is what makes it a little harder.

You are correct in the interpretation of my question about another OFA remote. Thank you. I can do some soldering, but I'm not really comfortable scraching traces and trying to solder to them. I did read the instructions about the mod you refer to.

I will go ahead and learn the commands into my Pronto and try to convert it myself. If I fail, I'll post the file to the board and ask for help. I don't mind trying it myself.

I really do appreciate all the help I have received thus far.

I learned my commands; made a CCF; decoded it...now I'm confused by the .TXT file. I opened it in Excel and I see lots of information that I don't understand.

Is there a reference I have overlooked on what do to with this to get it into Keymap-Master and/or Ir.exe?

I'd like to learn how to do this, although I'm not above giving up and handing it over to you if that would be easier than teaching me.

I placed the .CCF and .TXT (from DecodeCCF) in a zip file in the diagnostic area: Denon ADV-1000.ZIP

Mark here are the commands sorted in device/obc order. I annotated which panels they were under. Many commands were under multiple panels T is Tuner, D is DVD, C is CDR.

The tuner numerals looked like bad learns. If the numerals are different than the ones in the DVD panel, then please re-learn them. Also +10 and Call in the Tuner Panel were bad learns and need to be re-learned.

Wow. Thank you. Which protocol would I use in keymap-master? Should I use "Denon Combo (Official)" or "Denon Combo"? I don't know where to look to find what is different about the two protocols.

Maybe there was some ESP floating around or something. When I wrote up the "help" doc for DecodeCCF, I had not yet seen your CCF file so I had no idea what the decode would look like, but it just so happens that the data in the examples I used are are mixture of Denon device code 2 and Denon device code 12, and I mention in the doc that in this case you would need the "Denon Combo" protocol.

Btw, it's generally considered polite to actually post a link to your files when you post files in the file section for us to look at, as it saves us the effort of having to surf over to Yahoo and find the files manually.

What is the difference between the "official" and the "hacked" versions of the Denon Combo protocols?

When I get the upgrade working, I presume I should post it to the Yahoo group for others to use, correct?

It's probably a question of memory. Since the "Denon Combo (Official)" apparently isn't in the built in library in the 8800 then "Denon Combo" is smaller and probably easier to use.

If you had a remote with the "Denon Combo (Official)" in the built in library then you wouldn't have to do a Protocol upgrade and that would save some bytes. Rob wrote the Denon Combo the other is the official version from UEIC.

Since I had the spreadsheet already, I just pasted in the data in the functions tab and built a starter upgrade. I assigned some logical keys. You need to select what functions you need on the buttons that you want in the buttons tab.

BTW, there is a 50 Byte limit in device upgrades for the 8800. I think there is a workaround for that limitation in the form of an extender, but my 8800 knowledge is thin.
