URC-8811: "Deceptive" Manual

Post by montybass »

I just bought one for $20. With the exception of the four learning buttons and the lack of the LCD, it is pretty much the same as my 15-2116. I bought it to see if I could get more functions out of it (I kept getting "memory full" with the 2116). Indeed I did. Despite what the manual may lead you to believe, you can make almost any button "learn" a new function, just like the 15-2116. For some reason, my 2116 supported the PVR functions of my DISH Network receiver out of the box, but the 8811 did not. I simply used learning to put the functions into the 8811, which I got directly from the 2116. :) I managed to get all of the learned functions of my 2116 and more into the 8811. The four extra buttons are nice to have. The advantage of the LCD on the 2116? I didn't have to look up any codes to program the 8811. :D The 8811 is a great value for $20, especially since I considered paying $90 for a Kameleon.

I ordered my JP1 ultra cable, so I'll play with that when I get home from my trip.

List of devices currently programmed:

RCA D34W20 HDTV monitor
Panasonic DVD-S25S DVD player
DISH Network DVR-510
SONY Receiver (model not handy; I'm on a work trip)
Toshiba VCR (model not handy)

When you get your JP1 cable you'll be able to see which memory region is full. There are three memory regions (with hard coded boundaries): Keymove+Macro/Upgrade/Learning. You should be able to use IR (with DecodeIR.dll) to convert your learned signals to a device upgrade (to save even more memory). Then you can try an extender to fully customize things :)
