I’m brand new to the world of JP1 and I installed IR.EXE first on a 64 bit Windows 7 Ultimate and when I ran into problems I installed in a 32 bit Windows XP Pro. The Windows XP Pro is where I will test until I get everything working. Bottom line, I get errors from “The interface doesn’t appear to have enough power – this can occur if the interface has no batteries or if the interface is not currently connected to the remote” to “Failed to open JP1.x Interface”.

I started with an USB cable from diygadget.com/ buying their JP1.2/1.3 Cables with the Jp1 adapter http://www.diygadget.com/jp1-1-1-1-2-1-3-cables/jp1-2-1-3-to-jp1-adapter.html made by TIAO Corp. The only drivers that would work with the cable were the Prolific Drivers.
When that didn’t work, I purchased a Com Port Card for the PC and purchased a Universal Remote Control URC UEI Radio Shack JP1 (eeprom) PC Programming Cable http://tinyurl.com/bq3thop. I did not install any drivers other than the ones that came with the COM Port Card.

The remotes I tried were the URC-9960 B01 - Kameleon 8 Dev LCD – http://www.amazon.com/One-For-All-URC-9960/dp/B0000ALPBJ (with pogo pins), Replay TV 5000 http://tinyurl.com/replaytv5K and the replayTV http://tinyurl.com/replayTV2.

If I can get IR.EXE to recognize the remotes, I believe I can do the rest. Any suggestions?

Can you fix your tinyurl link? It doesn't work.

In any case, with a comm card, the parallel port address is often not a standard one. So check device manager to find the port address, then enter that into IR and it should work. However, some comm cards only emulate a printer port, not a full parallel port, so it won't work in that case.

I assume you also tried fresh batteries and turning the connector around the other way.

Also, IR should work fine on Win 7 64, assuming you have 64 bit drivers.

The two URLs have a period at the end - which is why they don't work. The first problem one is in the sentence: When that didn’t work, I purchased a Com Port Card for the PC and purchased a Universal Remote Control URC UEI Radio Shack JP1 (eeprom) PC Programming Cable http://tinyurl.com/bq3thop

The second one is in: The remotes I tried were the URC-9960 B01 - Kameleon 8 Dev LCD – http://www.amazon.com/One-For-All-URC-9960/dp/B0000ALPBJ (with pogo pins), Replay TV 5000 http://tinyurl.com/replaytv5K and the replayTV http://tinyurl.com/replayTV2

I tried fresh batteries and old batteries. I want to make sure I fully understand your reply. I purchased only a COMM Port - not a parallel port. When it went thru the windows install, it disabled the parallel (wasn't sure why it even came up). Should I go back and try to enable it?

One more note - I purchased a 9 Pin Serial Port Communications card. No parallel port or printer port.

I did try the connectors in opposite directions.

No, don't worry about the parallel port in that case. This serial JP1 EEPROM interface is new to me. Maybe someone else is familiar with it.

IR.exe (at least the 8.03 or 8.04 versions) have an option to select a JP1 Serial interface on the Interface menu. I don't have such an interface. but when I select JP1 Serial, IR.exe immediately asks me which COM Port to use. COM1 through COM4 are listed, but COM3 and COM4 are grayed out on my computer because it only has two serial ports. Make sure that you haven't selected JP1.x Serial, and also check using Device Manager that your computer is displaying the COMM card COM Port in the range COM1 through COM4.

If this doesn't work, tell us exactly the contents of the error mesage(s).

I just got that jp1.2-1.3 cable with the jp1 adaptor. Works fine in Win7 x64 here with IR 803. Only driver I needed was the prolific one that I got from here. Which still works fine after updating the driver in windows update.
If using Win8 x64. Do not update the driver with WU. It won’t work after updating.
I had to figure out how to put the adaptor on with the correct orientation.

I moved back to my 64 Bit Windows 7 Ultimate machine and loaded the latest Prolific drivers and doing a lot better. I thought I could download the custom programming I had already done to my URC-9960-B01, but it doesn't look like I can do so unless I load it first. I am having issues uploading to the URC unit, but hopefully over the next few days I will get that staightened out. Thanks for everyone's help. I truely appreciate it.
