What am I doing wrong? Button/Function labels are resetting

Post by JLPicard »

I connect my remote and load up RM IR.

Click Download from the Attached Remote.

The remote lights up once, then twice and the fields in the General Tab are populated.

I select #1, CBL, then click Edit Device at the bottom of that section.

I select Load at the next popup Device Upgrade Editor

Making my way to where I have downloaded the upgrade, I hightlight it, and click Open in the pop up window.

A popup comes up letting me know about Lost Function Assignments, only one button there, non matching, I get it, I click OK.

The Device Upgrade Editor window returns to the top and it is now populated with my upgrade.

I select the Buttons Tab and find that the Button/Function/Shift are populated with explanations of what functions each button on this upgrade will control, what I see is fine, so I select OK at the bottom right.

Back to the RM IR screen I see that the #1 Device Button CBL, has changed, there are now some Notes in the Note window relating to the Upgrade.

I select Upload to the attached Remote, the Remote responds, Blinks once, twice.

This is the part I don't understand:

I then go directly back to Edit Device, with the same Device selected above.

Device Upgrade Editor opens up, I navigate to the Buttons Tab, only to find that all the Button/Function labeling that I saw as described above is no longer as it was, It has all changed back to the Button column exactly matching the Function column line for line.

The files you get from our file section to build your RMIR file are what you should be working with since they contain all the text descriptions of the all the functions plus any notes you may have added. None of that information is ever stored in the remote. The remote only stores codes, not any text. So when you download from the remote, all those labels are lost.

In your case, you should always only upload to your remote, never download from it. The few reasons for a regular user to download from a remote include getting a baseline for a new config or capturing learned commands. Beyond that, you wipe out all the text data as you have discovered.

Does that make sense?

Once you have downloaded from RMIR, you should save off an RMIR file, and from then on you should be working from the RMIR file. You shouldn't be doing downloads anymore, you are going to want to modify your RMIR file and save it on your hard drive. Your RMIR file has a lot of information that is not in your remote.

It is a refresh bug in RMIR. If you navigated to the Device tab and looked at it, its fine. If you navigate back to the General tab and press edit, it is refreshed and looks fine.

In all the testing I did, I never noticed that there was an Edit button on the General tab.

Perfect, thanks for the response guys. I understand now, for some reason I thought all the notes and text changes I saw during this process were stored, now i know better.
