IR protocol speed?

I haven't used a JP1 remote in a while but since you guys are extremely knowledgeable I thought I'd ask a question here...

Is there a difference in IR protocol speed?

For example, is the NEC1 protocol slower than RC5? (or whatever)

I know that hardware can make a difference (both the transmitter ...

I'm talking about repeatedly pressing a button (like an arrow key) and having it send out each signal quickly.

The Harmony (even with 0 delays in those advanced settings) buffers commands so for example if you press the down arrow six times quickly, after you let go of the button the remote will ...

What is the fastest JP1 remote with RF?

I've used a Radio Shack 15-2117 (I think) for years and it worked great but the RF receiver eventually had a problem and it was sending a constant IR signal even with no buttons pressed.

Afterwards I moved to a Harmony 890 but it's very slow, feels cheap, and has a problem when hitting a button ...

Well, this is the reason I purchased the IR Widget from Tommy (on these forums) to see exactly how the OEM remotes are sending their signal.

The OEM remotes do not send any repeats on a single key press. Therefore, the Harmony shouldn't send any repeats, right?

Also, I tried learning the signal ...

Thanks! I've purchased an IR Widget and it seems incredibly useful. I've taken a look at learned signals before but I wanted to see exactly how many repeats, etc, it was sending and it looks like the widget is giving me that extra information.

However, my harmony remote responds much slower when ...

Thanks for the help. I ended up ordering the IR Widget and already received it (very fast shipping!). I've only used it for a couple of minutes but it seems EXTREMELY useful.

I think I'll need a bit of time trying to understand all of the information it's showing me though. :)

Thanks fro the information.

I actually noticed his device after I posted this question so I've sent him an e-mail and will probably order one.

However, is it possible to use my existing JP1 remote as an IR receiver so I don't need to purchase the widget?

Can a regular (parallel port) JP1 remote be used with this?

(ie. can I point a remote at my JP1 remote and have the signal sent to the PC?)

Best way to analyze existing remote signals? (ie. codes)

I've been using a very old RadioShack 15-2116 (I think?) remote control and it's finally died so I'm trying a Logitech 890 RF remote and it seems extremely slow.

I'm wondering if the problem is the codes and delays that it's using.

What's the best (easiest) method to analyze what signals (codes ...

Thanks for looking at it.

It's strange because it's a pretty big difference in speed.

Could you protocol be sending out repeat signals for every button press where-as the learned protocol is only sending out one signal?

EDIT: It also stinks that I can't use learned signals with the extenders :(

Thanks so much for trying to help.

I've uploaded three files:

IR file that is using keymap master devices and protocols - This works very slow compared to the next file. (look at the VCR device using the MCE protocol)

IR file that contains learned commands - This works VERY fast. (again, look ...

I've made an interesting discovery today...

If I LEARN the IR signal from my original remotes, then my RS 15-2117 is LIGHTNING fast with those commands.

However, if I use keymap master and setup the device manually it is much, much slower.

The protocol is the same (MCE) from the learned signal ...

Thanks for all of the replies.

Is it bad to have an upgrade overflow? Here is the message I get from IR.exe:

"Upgrade overflow. There is more data in your device-independent upgrade section that can be stored in the remote. Do you want to move some upgrade devices and/or protocols to the Learned ...

Gotcha. Thanks!

However, I'm using an extender which doesn't featuer VPT (eg. everything is manual so you must create "VPT" by yourself), so I don't think I have to worry about that.

By the way, do extenders generally speed up the regular button presses on a remote control? (eg. non-macro)

Thanks for the replies!

I guess I'll have to reconfigure everything as a cable device since that seems to be the only device with a sleep button.

Thanks
