slr_65,

I have some spare cables lying about (don't ask; it's a disease). I'd be happy to send you one for the cost of postage.

I'm assuming I got the wiring wrong, does anyone know what color wires should go to which pins?
As observed by 3FG just a few posts back:
Please don't use the color of the wires as guide to how to hook up the cable, because the colors aren't standardized in any way.
So unfortunately there's no ...

irv6744 has said that he installed the "pl?" drivers from the DIYGadget website. Those are Prolific drivers.
Indeed. I should read twice before posting. My apologies for the confusion.

To reinforce 3FG's post, if you have a JP1.x remote (e.g. an Atlas) and your cable works with it, then the ...

Sorry, misread your original post.

So you've installed the FTDI driver. Does the port show up in the device manager when the cable is connected? Have you tried manually using the port shown in the device manager with RM IR rather than using auto detect?

Wait... 6131? That's a JP1 remote. It won't work with a JP1.x cable (unless you are using an adapter).

Glad you got everything working.

And thanks for the update... it always bugs me when someone resolves their issue and doesn't post a followup to help the next guy.

Most widely available: RCA RCRP05BR
Last month I picked up 8 RCRP05BRs at a local WalMart for $1 each.
Unfortunately, shortly after that score, WalMart removed the ability to check store inventory for this item from their web site.

I created a protocol to change this so that the lights will light up for dev4, dev5 and dev6.

dev4 will light the DVD/VCR LED
dev5 will light the CBL/SAT LED
dev6 will light the DVR/AUX LED
Hi vicky. Much thanks for this, it works great.

If I may ask, how difficult is it to change which LED ...

Posting a followup for anyone who sees this problem in the future.

First, thanks to 3FG for his very insightful help.

I ultimately got the uploads to work, and the resolution is surprising and confusing.

As I mentioned, I was using the final version of Tommy's JP1X Flash Interface that he was ...

Just a quick note about picking an eBay FTDI serial cable.

I just happened to notice that the auction listing that many of us have used since neipski first posted it back on 1/26/2013 ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=261101529602 ) has changed the description from 3.3V to 5V ...

then it will program my 8910 just fine. Right?
(assuming, of course, all mentioned hardware works OK)
Yes, I believe it should, but I must again mention that I've only ever used an EEPROM adapter with a USB JP1.x interface, not an old-school serial interface. I don't see any reason it shouldn't ...

Re: JP1 I/face from PC with no in-built Serial or Parallel p

I'd like to consider USB only if 1 and 2 above are not feasible
I'm curious why you are reluctant to make the jump to USB. It's really the easiest (and most future-proof) option.

You can build a JP1.x USB interface for about $10 ( http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=13928 ).

A JP1 ...

The image is indeed changed from the pristine 981 image after the failed upload. Looking in RM IR, the only visible difference is that the single DSM defined in the upgrade is present, but not the devices or protocol.

Output from both remotes was identical (non-printable characters in bold):

IS<K$V(^F^@31793179.

981 reset both remotes, downloaded in RM IR. Images were identical.
